Replacing Sling Commons JSON (org.apache.sling.commons.json)

Adobe states that Cloud Service does not support this API; it was deprecated on 15 May 2023 with a tentative removal date of 31 December 2027.

Affected packages and APIs

  • org.apache.sling.commons.json.*

What to use instead

javax.json (Apache Johnzon, provided by the platform), or Jackson / Gson embedded in your bundle.

How to fix it

  1. Replace JSONObject / JSONArray construction with javax.json builders or Jackson ObjectNode.
  2. Replace JSONWriter output in servlets with a Jackson ObjectMapper or JsonGenerator.
  3. Check number formatting and null handling in API responses; they differ slightly between libraries.

AEM 6.5

JSONObject json = new JSONObject();
json.put("title", page.getTitle());
response.getWriter().write(json.toString());

Cloud Service

JsonObject json = Json.createObjectBuilder()
    .add("title", page.getTitle())
    .build();
response.getWriter().write(json.toString());

How we detect it

  • Readiness scan rule sling-commons-json: Sling Commons JSON.

Best Practices Analyzer reports it under OCU.

Can agents fix it?

High, with contract tests on any JSON endpoint consumed by other systems.
